Special Request Chit

In the US Navy a sailor desiring to go on leave or "special liberty" was required to complete and submit a Special Request Authorization form (a/k/a Special Request Chit). If required, the submitter would have to find a "standby" to take his place on the duty roster.

Submitted chits went up multiple levels in the chain of command to whomever was empowered to approve such things.

Aboard the TAGS ships one could usually find someone who didn't care to go ashore after four long weeks at sea. For a few dollars the "standby" would take one's watch while the ship was in port. This meant four hours of sitting in the little "guard shack" at the entrance to the OCDET/OCUNIT spaces with an unloaded .45 trying to stay awake.

Special Request Chits specified that one had to log out and in with the OOD (Officer of the Deck).  I don't remember that we ever had an OOD. Perhaps the guy in the guard shack was the OOD's surrogate or something.

The mode of travel had to be specified and no hitchhiking was allowed!
