Prior to the
autumn of 1962
the ship operated out of Bergen,
Norway. Michelson rarely visited a Navy port until it's
return to Brooklyn in the fall of '63. During my tenure (late 1962
through 1964) aboard Michelson we visited these ports:
- Belfast, Northern Ireland (Harland & Wolff Shipyard)
- Barcelona, Spain
- Brooklyn, New York (Brooklyn Army Terminal)
- Brooklyn, New York (Navy Yard)
- Bayonne, New Jersey (Naval Supply Center)
- San Juan, Puerto Rico
- Port Canaveral, Florida
- Fort Lauderdale, Florida (Port Everglades)
- Riviera Beach, Florida (Port of Palm Beach)
- Oakland, California (Oakland Army Terminal)
- Richmond, California (Willamette Shipyard)
- Yokosuka, Japan (US Naval Base)
Also, in September 1964 Michelson made a daylight transit through the
Panama Canal.
