Michelson in The Minch

We lost a lot of survey time during the winter of 1962-63 because of bad weather. Really bad weather, very strong winds and heavy seas. When the weather got nasty we headed for The Minch. Scotland and the Inner Hebrides are separated from the islands making up the Outer Hebrides by about 20 miles of somewhat protected waters. Steaming into the wind, "hove to", we'd wait until the weather improved.

Strange mythological creatures, the "Blue Men of the Minch" were said to dwell there. According to Wikipedia, they were " looking for sailors to drown and stricken boats to sink. They appear to be localized to The Minch and surrounding areas, unknown in other parts of Scotland and without counterparts in the rest of the world."
