Oceanographic Detachment 3, the US Navy unit aboard USNS Michelson, is pictured here on the starboard side forward of number 2 hatch in July or August 1963.
This photo was taken prior to Michelson's return to the USA for an overhaul at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a/k/a New York Naval Shipyard. The Navy personnel supported the ship's deep ocean survey mission conducted by civilian hydrographic staff from the US Naval Oceanographic Office.
Michelson was operated by a crew of civilian merchant mariners employed by the Military Sea Transport Service (MSTS), now known as Military Sealift Command (MSC).
The detachment members are identified in this edition of Atlantic Voyageur, the Navy unit's newspaper.

Welcome aboard survey ship USNS Michelson (T-AGS-23).
For 17 years (1958-75) Michelson collected data about the earth's oceans and created navigational charts.
John Hansen was a member of the ship's Navy oceanographic team from late 1962 through 1964.
Here are his recollections and reminiscences of people, places and ports of call.
